THE BAD SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Written by: Mohamed Abdi Fatah Mahmoud (AMEEN GUULEED)

                           14 August 2022

Social media is very effective platform in different means and it is double edged sword that has it’s positivity and negativity, before the social media platforms become more available to the public everything that was presented to the people had to go through censorship, certain policy and discipline, the news and other programs were edited only by professional persons who intended to present decent content that can become a long term legacy, any presenter who cross over the strict censorship of public press laws was disqualified and low-graded, due to this strict policies the public press used to express very disciplined contents, the misleading of the media through news and other programs was very minimal and the spread of inaccurate news had never been close to what it is today.

EXCESSIVE USAGE OF THE SCREEN

There are millions of channels in All different platforms of social media like Facebook and YouTube, the desire and the goal of almost every influencer in social media is to gain attention instead of focusing on the quality of what is being presented to the audience, this attention seeking behavior leads to increased usage of the media and the more time you are on the screen will increase the risk of depression, social anxiety and the fear of missing out (FMO) which can damage our brain enormously, all such kinds of mental issues gradually makes the person a psychopath.

The famous figures in social media are at higher risk of the mental issues that I mentioned in above because of the fear of missing out that is caused by the constantly checking of their posts turns them mentally disturbed individuals who only strive to entertain their followers with fake life style and the consequence is exasperating.

The average person spends 3 to 5 hours on their phones which is tremendous amount of time and it is growing roughly 13% annually, there are 4.480 billion active users on social media in 2022.

According to Common Sense media report nearly half of all children at the age of 8 and above have their own tablet devices and spend around 2 – 3 hours on the screen

The increased time kids spend on the screen disturbs their sleep and other brain developmental aspects such as learning, understanding and physical activity, on the other hand it also misleads them by misinforming the children with explicit Contents which are not always exclusive for kids due to the lack of age restriction contents in some of the social media platforms.

Misleading

From November 30 to December 31 2021 a survey was conducted by the university of Minnesota faculty of journalism 2,500 people were invited to participate the survey and more than 1,500 members of the US news media completed the questioner,

Among the findings 90.7 percent of respondents said the role social media companies play in delivering the news results is a misleading, while 86.5 percent said social media companies have too much control over the mix of news people see. Some 79.3 percent said social media has a mostly negative impact on the journalism industry, and an overwhelming 94.3 percent of respondents blamed social media for spreading inaccurate news.

The ability to spot fake and inaccurate news is very low especially among the teen aged people, and there is no one who is held responsible for this because the social media gives full right to anyone to express his/her view.

Hate speech

Although Social media is good platform for giving voice to the voiceless people it can also be used to oppress and discriminate the minorities especially in my country Somalia there is Huge bone of contention between the major tribes that Stigmatize each other in social media especially in Facebook and Tik-tok. The massive spread of tribalism and disgracing each other in tribe wise damage the feeling, dignity and morals of some people which accelerates racism and hate speech among the society.

In some countries Social media is a tool used to add fuel to the fire of Inter religious conflicts and cultural discrimination, the media takes major role in erupting violent social stigma that can destroy the unity of the society.

Spoiled contents

The thrilling and the excitement it gives while creating Tiktok contents can encourage some to create shocking challenges, I recently came across a bunch of videos that are intended to respond to a challenge in Ttiktok which is really very shocking, some young teen are posting video of dogs eating cereal from their mouth after pouring milk into it while the cereal is in their mouth, such kind of videos have million views and such videos are spreading intensively on the internet while dog’s saliva contain some Infection that can harm the human, one of these infections is the bacteria called Capnocytophaga which contains the saliva of Dogs that can spread to the human through biting, scratching or any other close contact of the Dog’s saliva.

On the other hand, there are some very famous tiktok stars in Somalia who always post videos that explicitly show their intimate and erotic body parts with seductive and sexy body expression and some have opened channels which are exclusive for twerking with tight clothing whereas in our Islamic religion women should cover all their body parts apart from face and palms as mentioned in the Quran women should lower their gaze and guard their modesty as mentioned in the following verse

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, [a list of relatives], [household servants], or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss. 24:31

Written By: Mohamed Abdifatah Mohamoud (Ameen Guuleed)   Al-Shabaab is the most powerful terrorist group in the region of horn of Africa and their core principle is to rule Somalia under the Islamic sharia low by their interpretations, since Al-Shabaab was found they ruled by intimidating and terrifying. Every Somali authority’s priority is to eliminate Al-Shabaab since the election of president sheikh Sharif sheikh Ahmed.  Although Sharif succeeded in capturing more than 60 percent of the city from Al-Shabaab he didn’t do well in abstaining al-Shabaab from their malevolent desires of bombing and killing innocent people. Despite the efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab they were growing in terms of wealth and intelligence, now most of the people believe some of major government officials are in cooperate with the terrorist group and that gives Al-Shabaab an access to the government resources directly and indirectly, Some of the government officials have direct link with al-Shabaab ...
